Con Brazos Abiertos featured in New York Public Library Exhibition, Declaring America: 1776 and Beyond,

NYPL’s major, multi-gallery exhibition that explores the histories, legacies, and themes of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution through the Library’s remarkable and diverse collections. The exhibition serves as the centerpiece of 250 Years: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. NYPL’s system-wide initiative to honor the United States’ semiquincentennial, which includes programs, booklists, displays, educational materials, and more.

Con Brazos Abiertos, from the collection of the Library for the Performing Arts, will be featured in this exhibition, which will run from June 15, 2026 through January 2027. The exhibition spans three galleries across the Library’s 42nd Street building that explore the histories, legacies, and themes of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. Two galleries on the first floor draw on the Library's historical collections to tell the stories of the American Revolution in New York ("Revolutionary City"), and explore revolutionary legacies through collections related to protest and activism ("The Pursuit of Liberty").

On the third floor, "Art as Declaration" will feature over 40 works by contemporary artists from the Library’s collections of fine art and performance media, which is where Con Brazos Abiertos will be on display. It is one of four dance choreographies featured. The works were selected with the following questions in mind: What did the Declaration of Independence promise, and what did it leave unfinished? And how have artists reframed and reimagined those promises, 250 years later?
